An Introduction to
the Community Tax Forum

The Community Tax Forum was established in 2008 by the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Australian Council of Social Service, Consumers’ Federation of Australia and Australian Conservation Foundation after consultation with a number of community organisations and research groups.

The main purpose of the Forum is to encourage and facilitate contributions from a wide range of community organisations around Australia to the review of tax reform issues being undertaken by a Panel appointed by the Commonwealth Government's Taxation Review and chaired by Dr Ken Henry.

The Forum's work is concerned with basic principles for tax reform, key directions for action and particular proposals for change. It focuses on identifying possible convergence of opinion amongst community organisations rather than seeking detailed agreement on specific options.

The Forum's main activities involve

  • commissioning, or encouraging, the preparation of information and policy papers;
  • conducting Round Tables on specific issues or for particular groups of community organisations;
  • convening major National Tax Reform Symposiums.

The four organisations which established the Forum have agreed a short Outline of Priorities for Tax Reform. There is no requirement, however, that participants in Forum activities must endorse this statement.
